Best Basket Position for Photos During Your Cappadocia Flight

The east-facing side of the basket is the best spot for photography. The sunrise light hits your face and the landscape in front of you, giving you warm golden tones without squinting into the sun. But every position has its strengths—here is what each side offers.

Basket Layout: Where to Stand

Cappadocia balloon baskets are commonly divided into 4 or 5 compartments, though the exact layout depends on the operator and balloon. The pilot typically stands in the centre, with passengers filling the surrounding sections. You generally cannot move freely between compartments during flight—the crew usually assigns your spot before takeoff.

Position-by-Position Breakdown

East Side (Sunrise-Facing)

The golden spot. You face the sunrise directly, capturing the warm light on fairy chimneys and other balloons rising in front of you. Selfies and portraits come out beautifully because the light falls on your face. This is the most requested position—arrive early at the launch site to get it.

West Side (Back to Sunrise)

You get dramatic backlit shots of balloons silhouetted against the sunrise. The landscape in front of you (westward valleys) is evenly lit without harsh shadows. Great for wide landscape shots and balloon silhouettes. Selfies will be darker unless you use fill flash.

North or South Sides

Side light creates depth and texture in your photos. You will see balloons on both sides. These positions are excellent for video shooting because you can pan from sunrise to landscape in one smooth movement.

Tips to Get the Best Position

  • Arrive early at the meeting point. Passengers who board first often get their preferred compartment and the best angle.
  • Ask your pilot politely—most pilots are happy to place photography enthusiasts on the sunrise side if there is space.
  • Bring a wide-angle lens or use your phone’s ultrawide mode. The basket edge is close, so you need the extra field of view.

Does Position Matter for Video?

For Reels and TikTok, any position works because the balloon rotates slowly during flight, giving every side a turn at the best view. Mount your GoPro on the basket edge with a clamp and let it roll. Check our camera settings guide for the right exposure values.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I request the east (sunrise) side when boarding?

Yes, ask your pilot politely before takeoff. Passengers who arrive early at the launch site and board first have the best chance of getting their preferred compartment.

Can I move between basket compartments during the flight?

No. Basket compartments are separated by dividers, and passengers stay in their assigned section for the entire flight. This is standard practice to help maintain proper weight distribution.

Does where I stand in the basket affect my photos?

Yes—position matters more than anything else. Arrive early, ask politely for the east-facing side, and use a wide-angle lens or your phone’s ultrawide mode to make the most of your spot in the basket.
