Know Before You Fly
Cappadocia Balloon Cancellation & Weather
How Weather Decisions Are Made
Hot air balloon flights require calm, stable weather conditions. Every morning, your assigned operator's licensed pilot reviews real-time meteorological data — including wind speed and direction at multiple altitudes, visibility, cloud cover, and precipitation forecasts.
The go/no-go decision can be confirmed the day before your flight, or at the last minute on the morning of the flight — timing depends on how conditions are developing. It is always made in the interest of passenger safety.
The Role of the CAA
Turkey's Civil Aviation Authority (SHGM) oversees all balloon operations in Cappadocia. The CAA may issue a region-wide flight ban when conditions are unsafe. When this happens, no operator in Cappadocia is permitted to fly. Our team closely monitors CAA communications and will inform you promptly if a ban is issued.
Day-to-day flight status for the region is published by SHM (Kapadokya) at shmkapadokya.kapadokya.edu.tr, using three statuses: Green — the operating period is meteorologically available, but the final flight decision still rests with the licensed operator and pilot; Yellow — takeoff clearance is temporarily withheld while conditions are reassessed, and the status may later change to Green or Red; Red — the flight is cancelled for that operating period. Above Cappadocia does not set this status or make the flight decision itself — it coordinates your booking with whichever licensed operator is assigned to your date.
What Happens When Flights Are Cancelled
If your flight is cancelled due to weather or operational safety, we will notify you as early as possible — this can be confirmed the evening before or at the last minute on the morning of the flight. Your booking is refunded: for card-paid bookings, a €10 per-passenger card-processing fee is deducted from the refund; cash or bank-transfer bookings are refunded with no deduction.
A weather-cancelled booking is not automatically or freely moved to another day — the next date is a brand-new booking, subject to that day's current price and availability. Your original price is not held, and the new price may be the same, lower, or higher. No slot is guaranteed for the next morning or any specific day. If space is available, we will help you make a new booking.
