The Cappadocia International Hot Air Balloon Festival is an annual event organized in partnership with the local tourism authority and balloon operators. It typically spans 3–5 days and includes:

• Mass ascents. All participating balloons launch within minutes of each other, creating the most densely packed sky of the entire year.
• Special-shape balloons. International pilots bring novelty balloons—animals, cartoon characters, and abstract shapes that do not fly during regular operations.
• Night glows. Tethered balloons inflate at dusk and fire their burners in synchronized patterns. The glowing envelopes against the twilight sky are spectacular for photographers.
• Cultural events. Live music, local food stalls, pottery demonstrations, and wine tastings from Cappadocian vineyards.
• Competition flights. Pilots compete in precision tasks—dropping markers on targets, navigating specific waypoints—judged by international officials.

When Is the 2026 Festival?

Official dates for 2026 have not been formally announced at the time of writing. Based on previous years, the festival typically takes place in one of two windows:

• July (most common): Usually the first or second week of July. Peak season weather means very calm, stable weather for the mass ascents.
• September (alternate): Some years feature a second event or shift the main festival to early September for cooler temperatures and harvest-season atmosphere.

Can You Fly During the Festival?

Yes. Regular passenger flights operate as normal during festival days. In fact, festival mornings are the most popular flying days of the year because you are airborne among the largest number of balloons—including the special shapes. Your flight is not a spectator experience; you are part of the spectacle.

Best Spots to Watch the Festival (If You Are Not Flying)

Not everyone can book a flight during the festival, and watching from the ground is its own experience. The best viewpoints:

• Goreme Sunset Point (Lovers Hill). The most popular viewpoint. Arrive by 5:00 AM to secure a spot. Faces east for direct sunrise light on the balloons.
• Uchisar Castle rooftop. The highest point in Cappadocia. 360-degree views of balloons in every direction. Opens early during festival days.
• Red Valley / Rose Valley trailhead. Less crowded than Goreme Sunset Point. The rock formations frame the balloons beautifully.

Festival Photography Tips

The festival creates unique photographic opportunities that regular flying mornings do not:

• Mass ascent framing. With a very large number of balloons launching together, wide-angle shots (16–35mm) capture the full scale. Telephoto (70–200mm) isolates individual special-shape balloons against clusters of standard ones.
• Night glow settings. Tripod essential. Shoot at ISO 800–1600, f/4–5.6, and shutter speed 1/15–1/60 to capture the burner glow without blur. The best moment is when multiple balloons fire simultaneously.
• Special shapes as subjects. The novelty balloons create whimsical foreground subjects with the fairy chimneys behind them. Position yourself so the special shape is between you and the sunrise for silhouette potential.

How to Book a Festival Flight

Festival flights use the same Sunrise Balloon Flight as every other morning: approximately 60 minutes, 22–28 passengers, from EUR 150 per person. You will be among the mass ascent alongside the special-shape balloons.

Where to Stay During the Festival

Accommodation in Goreme fills up quickly during festival week. Uchisar and Urgup are solid alternatives—both within 10–15 minutes of the launch fields, and our hotel pick-up covers all three towns.

• Book your hotel 2–3 months ahead. Festival week is the most in-demand period of the year for Cappadocia hotels.
