Will My Balloon Fly Today? Cappadocia Weather Requirements

The flight decision is typically made in the early hours of the morning of your flight. Meteorological assessment covers wind speed, visibility, precipitation, and cloud ceiling. If any factor falls outside the safe range, flights are grounded for that morning.

Weather Conditions Required for Flight

These figures are general, commonly cited hot-air-ballooning safety ranges, not a fixed Above Cappadocia rule—the SHM (Şehir Hava Meydanı, Kapadokya) publishes the day’s official Green/Yellow/Red flight status, and the final go/no-go decision rests with the assigned operator and pilot on the morning of the flight, not a single universal threshold.

Who Makes the Decision?

SHM (Kapadokya) publishes a flight status each morning at shmkapadokya.kapadokya.edu.tr: Green (meteorologically available), Yellow (takeoff clearance temporarily withheld, which can shift to Green or Red), or Red (flights cancelled for that period). A Red status grounds every operator in Cappadocia—but a Green status is not a guarantee of flight: the final call always belongs to the licensed operator and pilot assessing conditions on the ground. How Will I Know If My Flight Is Cancelled?

We notify you by phone, SMS, or WhatsApp, usually between 4:30 and 5:00 AM. If cancelled, you can sleep in. We will work to rebook you for another available morning, subject to availability—though the new date is treated as a new booking at that day’s current price rather than a free reschedule. If you do not have additional mornings in Cappadocia, your booking is refunded (a €10 per-passenger card-processing fee applies to card payments; cash and bank-transfer refunds have no deduction). Cancellation Rates by Month

Summer months (June–September) have the calmest flying weather of the year. Shoulder months (April, May, October, November) see more variable weather. Tips to Maximise Your Chances

• Plan multiple mornings. Even in winter, having 3 mornings in Cappadocia meaningfully improves your chance of catching at least one flyable morning.
• Book for your first morning. If it flies, great. If not, you have backup days, and we can move your booking to another available morning—subject to availability and that day’s current price.
• Check the forecast. While the official decision is made at 4 AM, you can get a general idea from weather apps the night before. Clear skies and calm winds are good signs.

Can Balloons Fly in Rain or Snow?

No. Any precipitation grounds all flights. Rain makes the balloon envelope heavy and unpredictable. Snow reduces visibility and creates ice on the envelope fabric. Light cloud cover is fine as long as the ceiling is above 1000 metres and winds are calm. Check best time to visit for seasonal weather patterns.
